Adviser resignation and federation opposition
Carlos Cordeiro, senior adviser to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, resigned with immediate effect on Friday in protest of the prospective sale. He stated: "It is a bad deal for FIFA's Member Associations, a bad deal for football, and a bad deal for the long-term future of the game."
Cordeiro added: "Let me be clear: I had no involvement in this proposal, and I oppose it unequivocally." FIFA said it heard feedback from UEFA and CONCACAF, and both said all 41 of their member associations rejected the proposal to sell a World Cup stake.
FIFA defends planned consultation
FIFA said all member associations should have a chance to consider the plan and noted its consultation was disrupted by incorrect media reports. It stated: "Nobody is selling football. This is not something FIFA would ever entertain."
FIFA reaffirmed: "We respect the feedback and concern aired in public and reaffirm our commitment to an open and democratic consultation." It added: "We will proceed with this consultation process to ensure that each (member association) has the ability to express its vote based on facts."
Proposed financial structure and payouts
The plan announced on Tuesday could raise up to $US4.2 billion based on a $US20 billion valuation of the FIFA Forward Enterprise, the commercial subsidiary proposed to run the World Cup and Club World Cup.
If approved, each of FIFA's 211 member associations would receive a one-off $US20 million payment in early 2027 and funding for 2027-2030 would rise from $US8 million to $US20 million.
