David Owori, the 27-year-old captain of Uganda Premier League club Sports Club Villa, was fatally injured during a robbery in Kampala on Tuesday night after attackers struck him with paving stones while attempting to steal his phone and other belongings.
The Attack and Aftermath
Owori was found unconscious by passersby who rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was later transferred to another facility where he was pronounced dead. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the details of the incident, noting that the attackers fled after leaving the footballer incapacitated.
Witnesses reported that the assailants hit Owori with paving stones before making off with his mobile phone and personal items. The brutality of the attack drew widespread condemnation, with many describing it as a senseless act of violence against a young athlete.
A Star of Ugandan Football
Owori, who played as a right-back and midfielder, helped SC Villa secure a record 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024. His senior career began in 2016 at Vipers Sports Club, and he later played in Europe with Vélez CF in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden.
Representing the Uganda Cranes in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Owori was celebrated as a leader and inspiration to a generation. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute, saying he carried the hopes of a nation in the national jersey.
National Mourning and Calls for Justice
The Ugandan parliament observed a minute of silence in Owori's honour on Wednesday, while SC Villa issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over his untimely passing. The club confirmed he had been receiving treatment at Case Clinic following the attack by suspected thugs.
Uganda's National Council of Sports highlighted that the country has recently suffered multiple tragedies involving violence against athletes, calling for justice and lasting solutions. The incident echoes a similar case in June when rugby international Sydney Gongodyo died after being attacked by a mob in Kampala.
