Aston Villa's 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo scored on his first competitive appearance in the Uefa Super Cup final, ending an 212-day wait for action after a lengthy Fifa registration battle was finally resolved through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
A Goal to End the Wait
Brian Madjo made his Aston Villa debut in the Uefa Super Cup final against Paris St-Germain in Salzburg, scoring a goal that cancelled out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's opener for the French champions. Aston Villa lost the Uefa Super Cup 2-1 to Paris St-Germain, but the 17-year-old's impact was immediate and impressive.
The 6ft 4in forward deputised for Ollie Watkins, who was rested after World Cup duty, and expertly held off Ecuador international Willian Pacho to volley in John McGinn's cross. Tammy Abraham was left on the bench, and Madjo expertly deputised for Watkins until he was replaced by Abraham with 18 minutes left.
The Registration Battle
Aston Villa was barred from registering Brian Madjo by Fifa until they won an appeal through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The battle to register Madjo was finally won just eight days ago after Villa took their case to CAS in July. Under-18 players cannot complete international transfers, but the club argued that since Madjo was born in London he should be exempt.
Fifa allows some exemptions for minor players to make moves, including if a 16 or 17-year-old transfers within the European Union, but the UK is no longer part of the European Union. Aston Villa signed Brian Madjo for £10m from Metz in January, and he was added to the travelling party for Salzburg, having not been included in the initial squad.
Manager's Praise and Future Outlook
Unai Emery said he played the match with players who were ready, fit, and trying to avoid risk. Emery said Madjo was showing his capacity to work and be demanding, not just about scoring goals. Emery said he wanted to play with young players and watch their progression, and that the young players have to keep being consistent, demanding, and keep performing at the level they were.
Former Villa striker Dion Dublin said he saw Brian Madjo and noted his bravery in getting back into scoring positions. Dublin said Madjo seemed to be dealing with pressure easily at 17. Villa have been looking to sign a new striker, with Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson as a summer target, but Madjo's availability now gives Emery a different option and dilemma before the Premier League season opener at Brighton on 23 August.
