Anthony Taylor, who retired from officiating after his second World Cup, says one-sided criticism from former referees creates a culture of fear, disrespect and shame among match officials.
The toll of constant scrutiny
Taylor, 47, officiated 668 English professional matches and 163 international fixtures before stepping down last month. He says the pressure and scrutiny faced by referees is off the scale and that any official would be lying if they said it did not bother them.
He describes the environment as a goldfish bowl for 10 months of the year, where fear of mistakes, external opinion and media criticism feed into self-doubt and can spiral out of control, eroding confidence on the field.
Family life takes a back seat
Taylor reveals his family no longer attends his matches because of the abuse he received, including being targeted by Roma fans at Budapest Airport after the 2023 Europa League final. He says family life has taken a back seat and that the sacrifices made by loved ones were a major factor in his decision to retire.
He decided to retire once his second World Cup ended, saying he wanted to finish on his own terms and that there is no better place to finish than at the tournament, though he admits a hint of sadness at leaving the game.
New role in Turkey amid betting scandal
Taylor has been appointed director of elite refereeing for the Turkish football federation, where a five-year investigation found 371 of 571 match officials had betting accounts. His main focus is helping officials, particularly younger ones, develop resilience and improve standards.
He says he would never want to criticise someone in the media and feels his skills are better suited to passing on knowledge and experience, while also expressing his biggest regret is never having officiated a Champions League final.
