Somalia's Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, H.E. Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, has directed all disaster management agencies to coordinate under the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) as the country braces for potential floods linked to a possible Super El Niño event.
High-Level Visit to Emergency Operations Centre
H.E. Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, accompanied by State Minister for Interior Sadaad Mohamed Nur Aliyow, visited the National Emergency Operations Centre in Mogadishu, where he was received by SoDMA Commissioner H.E. Mahmoud Maallin Abdulle. The visit centred on reviewing the nation's readiness to handle emerging disaster risks and the anticipated effects of a potential Super El Niño phenomenon.
During the inspection, the Minister examined the Centre's ongoing operational activities and assessed SoDMA's preparedness levels for the expected climatic impacts. Commissioner Mahmoud provided a detailed briefing on the Agency's current efforts to reinforce readiness and mitigate potential hazards across the country.
Call for Coordinated Disaster Response
The Minister urged all institutions and stakeholders engaged in disaster management to follow SoDMA's lead in coordinating response efforts. He emphasised that unified action would strengthen cooperation and prevent duplication of activities among various agencies working to safeguard the population.
Commissioner Mahmoud outlined SoDMA's ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing preparedness and preventing potential risks. The briefing highlighted the Agency's strategic role in centralising disaster management operations to ensure a more effective national response.
Warnings on Flood Risks and Community Support
Minister Hosh warned the Somali public to remain cautious and vigilant, citing the possibility of floods and flash floods resulting from the Super El Niño phenomenon. He stressed the need for heightened awareness to protect lives and property in vulnerable areas.
The Minister also called for increased support for vulnerable communities that may be disproportionately affected by the anticipated climatic events. He urged the government and humanitarian partners to ensure that relief efforts reach those most at risk.
