NASA's Curiosity rover celebrated its 14th anniversary on Mars this week, continuing its climb up Mount Sharp with detailed chemical and imaging measurements at a geologically rich site where wind and water once shaped the landscape.
A Decade and a Half of Martian Exploration
Curiosity launched from Earth on November 26, 2011, and touched down on Mars on August 6, 2012, beginning a mission that has now spanned 14 years. The 14th landing anniversary was observed on Earth planning date Friday, August 7, 2026, as the team reflected on the rover's enduring success and scientific contributions.
The rover's journey has been marked by remarkable milestones, including the moment the team heard the words, 'We are safe on Mars,' signaling a successful landing. Each year, the team re-lives these moments, celebrating another Earth year on Mars while continuing their vital work of investigating the planet's geological history.
Detailed Measurements at Tunas Khasa
On Sol 4976 at 19:47 LMST on Mars, the rover's robotic arm was deployed at the target 'Tunas Khasa' to perform an APXS measurement. This location was reached after a 46-foot (14-meter) drive, positioning the rover in front of a site where two different rock layers meet and cross-bedded rocks are truncated by other layers.
The site is significant because it involves evidence of both wind and water activity, offering clues about Mars' ancient environment. The rover will remain at this location through Monday, spending two planning cycles there to conduct further analysis and imaging of the surrounding rock formations.
Advanced Instruments and Environmental Monitoring
In addition to its primary science activities, Curiosity's RAD instrument continues to monitor the radiation environment, having been the first instrument activated after launch and even beginning its work during the cruise phase to Mars. The rover also conducted various housekeeping tasks, including SAM column-cleaning and MAHLI images of the REM UV sensor.
The team's plans included extensive environmental monitoring, with dust-devil surveys, atmospheric opacity measurements, and wind monitoring. The rover's tilt reached 24 degrees at one point last Friday, but engineers ensured its safe arrival at the planned location, demonstrating the precision and reliability of the mission's engineering.
