Trapped in Dangerous Structures
Masada Abu Jarad, 60, has lived for over a year in a partially collapsed apartment in Gaza City's Palestine Square area, with her family originally from Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza. The Palestinian Red Crescent and Civil Defence warned them last week to leave, but no safe alternative exists. 'We have no options,' Masada said. 'I want to leave, but who will give me an alternative?'
The family's inability to return home stems from Israel's refusal to allow reconstruction after nearly three years of war. Masada added, 'Even if there is a better place, tell me how I can afford to rent it.' The situation reflects a broader crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians across the Strip.
A Collapse That Changed Everything
On September 16, a six-storey residential building in Gaza City collapsed, killing 21 people, including 12 children, according to the UN and Gaza Civil Defence. The disaster has heightened fears among families living in other damaged structures. Abdullah Abu Hajar, 40, now stays awake all night listening for sounds of shifting concrete in the al-Najma building in Remal neighbourhood, where 17 families live amid municipal warnings of imminent collapse.
Abdullah, displaced from Beit Hanoon, said, 'I'm already on edge. But I don't know where I can go.' His extended family faces similar uncertainty, with one relative moving between southern and northern Gaza searching for a place to pitch a tent. The September 16 collapse serves as a stark warning for those still sheltering in unsafe buildings.
Living Among the Rubble
Islam Hassanein, 36, a mother of five, has spent nearly a year in a single room on the third floor of a leaning, visibly damaged building in Gaza City. The room was filled with rubble, and the plumbing is non-functional, forcing the family to use an outdoor bathroom. A column once fell, temporarily displacing them, and last winter she spent most days in a tent as the building flooded during rain.
Islam said, 'Every day, you hear the cracking. People who live here tell us, 'It's cracking.' Then a column fell, and they took us out of the building temporarily.' She fears the coming winter, noting, 'Now, I am very afraid of this winter, and I don't know what we are going to do.' The UN says thousands shelter in unsafe buildings because better housing options remain unavailable.
