The US economy shed 23,000 jobs in July, with the labour force participation rate falling to 61.4 percent, its lowest level in five years and its lowest since the pandemic when pandemic-related impacts are excluded.
Broad Job Losses Across Key Sectors
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rate edged down to 4.1 percent from 4.2 percent, yet the overall picture remains weak. Government was the hardest-hit sector, shedding 53,000 jobs, with local education alone losing 49,000 positions. The leisure and hospitality industry also contracted sharply, cutting 40,000 jobs, of which food services accounted for 26,000.
Retail trade lost 19,000 jobs overall, with warehouse clubs and big-box retailers shedding 21,000 positions and petrol stations cutting another 5,000. These losses were partially offset by gains at specialised stores, such as music and sporting goods shops, which added 10,000 jobs. Healthcare was the only major sector to grow, adding 22,000 jobs, primarily through ambulatory healthcare services, which gained 18,000 positions.
Labour Force Participation Drops Sharply
A total of 264,000 people left the labour force in July, meaning they are no longer working or actively seeking employment. This decline pushed the labour force participation rate to 61.4 percent, its lowest level in five years. Excluding the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate is now at its lowest point in five decades, signalling deepening disengagement from the workforce.
Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, warned that the economy is struggling, pointing to the falling participation rate as a clear sign of an ailing job market. He noted that low unemployment figures are misleading, as those losing jobs are leaving the workforce entirely, too discouraged to look for new opportunities while businesses remain reluctant to hire.
Markets React and Fed Outlook Shifts
Despite the disappointing jobs data, US stock markets rose on Friday, with the Nasdaq up 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 gaining 0.5 percent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing 0.3 percent in midday trading. Meanwhile, the price of gold surged 2.2 percent to $4,336.09 an ounce, reflecting investor caution amid economic uncertainty.
Expectations for the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting in September have shifted, with CME's FedWatch tool now forecasting a 56 percent chance that interest rates will remain unchanged at the current level of 3.50 to 3.75 percent. The number of job openings also declined slightly to 7.4 million from 7.5 million in May, while hiring remained steady at 5.3 million, underscoring a 'low-hire, low-fire' environment.
