Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the UN General Assembly that any attempt by India to stop, impede or divert Pakistan's share of the Indus River waters will be treated as an act of war, calling for diplomacy over confrontation in South Asia.
Indus Waters Treaty Confrontation
Sharif declared that India's unilateral decision to hold the existing Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance had no legal basis whatsoever, asserting that India's claims had been rejected by UN experts and the Court of Arbitration. He emphasized that water must never be weaponized and that rivers should nourish nations, not divide them.
The Pakistani Premier stated that the shared waters of the Indus River system are the lifeblood not only for the people of Pakistan but for the entire region, underscoring the critical importance of the treaty to regional stability and economic security.
Gulf Conflict and Diplomatic Efforts
Addressing the conflict that has roiled the Gulf in February, Sharif said Pakistan had brought Washington and Tehran together in Islamabad to address the crisis. He stressed that amid the roar of missiles, drones and guns, the voice for diplomacy must echo even louder and stronger.
Sharif condemned the recent Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, including the attempted drone attack on Mecca, and insisted that the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb Red Sea bottleneck must remain open to ensure global trade and security.
Kashmir, Gaza and Regional Security
Sharif said Pakistan had exercised its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter when it faced external aggression from India a year ago, crediting US President Donald Trump's intervention with averting all-out war between the two nuclear armed neighbours. He added that Kashmiris had waited eight decades for a UN plebiscite.
On Gaza, Sharif recalled eight-year-old Wafa Akilah, killed on what should have been her first day of school, and said the forcible eviction of Palestinians in the West Bank clearly reflects Israel's genocidal agenda. He also called on Afghan authorities to take verifiable, decisive action against terrorist groups operating from sanctuaries in Afghanistan.
