Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered a forceful address at the 81st UN General Assembly, condemning India over the 2025 border clashes and Kashmir dispute while crediting President Trump with saving millions of lives by brokering a truce between two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Sharif Condemns India Over 2025 Clashes and Kashmir
Sharif accused India of launching external aggression under a false pretext, asserting that Pakistan exercised its inherent right of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. He described the brief but intense military exchange, which Pakistan considers to have begun with Indian missile strikes on May 7, as a low-level conflict that lasted less than a week.
He demanded a just and fair resolution to the Kashmir dispute, stating that the Kashmiri people have waited eight decades for the UN to fulfil its solemn commitment of a free and impartial plebiscite. Sharif also criticized India for holding the Indus River System treaty in abeyance, calling the move one that has no legal basis whatsoever.
Pakistan Credits Trump with Saving Millions of Lives
Sharif praised US President Donald Trump's resolute and visionary leadership, crediting it with saving hundreds of millions of lives in South Asia by intervening when two nuclear neighbours stood at the brink of all-out war. He asked who could know the extent of devastation that could have taken place without Trump's clarity of thought and action at that critical moment.
Emphasizing the need to ensure South Asia never reaches this precipice again, Sharif argued that doing so would require a just and fair resolution of the Kashmir dispute. He also called for renewed peace talks between the US and Iran, touting Pakistan's mediation efforts since February, particularly in reaching the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Sharif Warns on Global Waterways and Houthi Attacks
Sharif declared that the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb are arteries of the global economy and must remain open, connecting nations rather than becoming chokepoints of confrontation. He insisted these waters must carry the promise of prosperity, not the perils of war, as hostilities surged recently.
He condemned recent deplorable Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia in the strongest possible terms, particularly the reported attempted drone attack on the holy city of Mecca, which he said outraged Muslims across the globe.
