Emergency crews responded to a late-night blaze on Manning Street as police rule out suspicious circumstances
A body was found after a house fire in Kiama on Saturday night. The home on Manning Street was destroyed, and authorities were called just before 9:30pm. Police say the blaze is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Emergency response at Manning Street
Authorities were called to the property on Manning Street in Kiama just before 9:30pm on Saturday night. Fire and Rescue NSW responded with eight fire trucks and about 28 firefighters to contain the incident in the residential coastal street.
The NSW Rural Fire Service and police assisted at the scene. The home in Kiama was destroyed by the blaze, with crews working to make the site safe before handing it to NSW Police for further investigation.
Victim and investigation status
The body of a person, yet to be formally identified, was located at the scene following the fire. Police have confirmed the death and stated the cause is not being treated as suspicious at this time.
A report will be prepared for the coroner as investigations continue. The incident marks the second house fire fatality in the NSW Illawarra region in a fortnight, following a woman's death in Coniston near Wollongong.
Local condolences
Kiama state MP Katelin McInerney expressed her deepest sympathies to the deceased's family and friends. She described the incident as incredibly sad in a statement posted on Sunday morning.
McInerney thanked local first responders, saying: "Thank you to the local first responders who acted so swiftly and worked to put out the blaze and responded with professionalism and compassion at a such a confronting scene."
