Trump said that since his first election in 2016, he and Xi have forged a friendship built on mutual respect and the vital interests of their people. Xi added that the two countries should avoid the 'Thucydides Trap' and compete in a 'race of catching up with one another, not a wrestle in which one either wins or loses'.
Xi urged that both nations engage in 'healthy' competition that is 'kept within bounds', reflecting a desire to manage rivalry without escalation. The leaders acknowledged that core disagreements persist, but both sides expressed a willingness to dial back tensions and improve dialogue.
Iran War and Strait of Hormuz
The US war on Iran, launched in February, has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and surging global energy prices. Trump called on China to support US efforts to isolate Tehran economically and reopen the strait, but no breakthroughs were reported during Thursday's talks.
Xi supported the US and Iran returning to an interim agreement that was supposed to pave the way for a larger peace deal, though that truce broke down shortly after it was announced in June. Beijing, Iran's largest trading partner, has remained hesitant to get involved in the conflict.
Taiwan and Mixed Lawmaker Reception
Xi urged Trump to oppose Taiwanese independence and handle the issue 'prudently'. Trump stated after a meeting with Xi in May that he would postpone final approval of a $14bn arms package for Taipei, calling arms sales a 'very good negotiating chip' with China. A May Economist/YouGov poll found that people in the US are much more likely to view Taiwan as an ally of the country than China.
The visit drew mixed reactions from US lawmakers. Republican Senator Roger Wicker said he would have advised against the lavish welcome, while Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said Trump 'always deludes himself into thinking that, by ingratiating himself with authoritarians, he's somehow going to get his way'. Republican Senator Rand Paul countered that 'diplomacy is key' and urged 'Talk more, war less'.
