Ethiopian federal forces fought off a rebel assault overnight in the Afar region, while reports of an internet blackout have cut off communications across northern Ethiopia as the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) launches a large-scale offensive against the government.
Fighting Intensifies in Afar and Amhara
A humanitarian source in the Afar region confirmed that heavy fighting took place overnight around the border town of Abala, which sits in the mountains adjacent to Tigray. Federal forces reportedly pushed back the rebels and prevented them from entering the town, with the army deploying drones during the engagement.
The conflict has also spread into the Amhara region, where clashes erupted on Thursday in the North Wollo Zone, including near the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Lalibela, home to Ethiopia's famous rock-hewn churches. The TPLF seized local airports in northern Tigray before launching attacks into neighbouring states.
TPLF Alliance Targets Supply Routes and Infrastructure
Analysts say the TPLF is repeating its strategy from the previous civil war by pushing south through Amhara toward the capital, Addis Ababa, while the offensive in Afar aims to sever supply lines from Djibouti, which handles nearly all of Ethiopia's international trade, including fuel imports.
The TPLF has formed an alliance with six other armed groups across the country in an effort to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. Edward Bach of Verisk Maplecroft noted that the alliance is likely trying to seize settlements alongside key infrastructure routes to undermine the federal government's ability to supply its forces.
Government Holds Military Edge Amid Regional Tensions
The Ethiopian government holds a significant military advantage, backed by a large arsenal of drones, an army of approximately 500,000 troops, and external support from the United Arab Emirates. The United States, which lifted sanctions on Ethiopia and Eritrea this month, expressed disappointment at the TPLF's large-scale offensive.
Locals in the region fear a repeat of the telecoms blackout and supply blockade imposed on Tigray during the 2020-2022 civil war, which killed an estimated 600,000 people. The conflict could also draw in neighbouring Eritrea, which fears Ethiopia may plan to invade it to gain access to the Red Sea.
